(Buddhist value: Like a lotus flower that grows out of the mud and blossoms above the muddy water surface, we can rise above our defilement(s) and sufferings of life) Imagine that you are a lotus seed buried beneath a muddy lotus pond. There is mud all around you, and you can feel them clearly. Above you, above this muddy pool of dirt, mud and filth, are sunshine and air. You are not disheartened as you begin your journey towards the surface. With a determined heart, you begin to wiggle in the earth. You grow roots deep, deep into the mud. Your little stem grows up slowly. Suddenly, "pop" you are out of the mud! Your stem grows higher and higher, taller and taller. You rise up slowly, fighting against the muddy water. All of a sudden, you are out of the muddy pond! You reach up towards the warm sun, shining down on you. Your lotus bud begins to grow on top of your stem. It expands and grows larger and larger, finally bursting into full bloom. A white lotus flower. You stand beautifully above the muddy water, not dirtied by the mud from which you grow. You are white, fragrant and beautiful. Everyone who saw you marveled at your beauty! Your determination to grow out of the muddy pond reminds them of the Buddha and his journey towards Enlightenment. The Buddha, like a lotus, is determined to grow out of the muddy surroundings, that is the defilement(s) and sufferings of life. He has done all that is to be done and he is showing us that we can all do it too. We may have defilement(s) but we all have the potential of growing out of our defilement(s) and achieving wisdom, like the Buddha. You are a beautiful white lotus flower, and your role is to remind people to rise above their defilement(s) and sufferings, just as you are arising above the muddy water and not dirtied by the mud from which you grow.

Prejudice among young people ~ A recent survey of 37 European countries found that over half of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people had experienced bullying in school. Furthermore, it is not just LGBT people who experience homophobic bullying; all young people who do not act in line with gender stereotypes can be subjected to severe bullying. For example, in some cultures boys are stereotyped as sporty and strong decision-makers, and girls are expected to be emotional and expressive. As a result, boys who show their feelings or who are too intimate with other boys are often labeled as homosexual by their peers. Instead of eating lunch at your desk, join your office mates in the cafeteria. At home, don't hole up inside by yourself. If your neighbors are out playing catch with their kids, go out for a chat. "The more you reach out to other people, the less likely you are to be left out," says Susan Heitler, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist in Denver and author of the audiotape, Anxiety: Friend or Foe?. Advertise your interests. Let people know that you're interested in doing things with them. If the gang at the water cooler is talking about in-line skating, say, "If you ever plan to go as a group, I'd love to come with you," says Dr. Heitler. Assess your style. If you're letting people know that you're interested but you're still getting left out a lot, the problem may be your style, says Dr. Shure. "In general, people like to be with other people who are happy, pleasant, well-groomed, interested in others and who don't criticize or complain or talk about others in a negative way," says Dr. Heitler. If you're not sure that you fit that description, check with someone you trust. "You might say, 'I was surprised, or a little confused, when I wasn't included in such and such,'" suggests Dr. Heitler. The response that you get will help you identify the underlying problem. Maybe you're too retiring or too domineering. And it will remind the other person that you'd like to participate. Be a better listener. If, on the other hand, you tend to dominate every conversation, other people will start to resent it and begin to exclude you, cautions Dr. Shure. So before jumping into a conversation, listen first. Interview others. Changing the topic to one that focuses more on you and your interests may turn people off, says Dr. Heitler. Instead, develop the art of asking questions. The more you invite others to talk about their activities and concerns, the more eager they will be to include you. Let yourself be curious about their worlds. (But don't offer unsolicited advice.) Give others equal time. Monitor conversations, says Dr. Heitler. "Make sure that everyone has spoken at least once before you speak again." If you are utilizing more than an equal share of the airtime, switch from talking to asking questions, she suggests. Be brief. Especially if several people are trying to speak, limit yourself to three sentences at a time, says Dr. Heitler. Choose differently. Still having problems? Perhaps, you're trying to fit into the wrong group. Accept the fact that some groups are closed to new members or have a style that's different from yours. Issue the invitations. Plan events and get-togethers yourself--you're guaranteed an invitation, says Dr. Shure. Like to read? Start a book discussion group. You're a movie buff? Invite a neighbor to the movie house. Play tennis? Ask a colleague to join you for a game of singles. "You might still be rejected," says Dr. Shure.
